New Year, New Mixtape: Can I Borrow Your Mixtape? #8

Sherman Oaks, December 2011

Malibu, January 2012

I must apologize for the blogging hiatus (I've grown rather partial to my Tumblr, coup de feu)-- but to make up for it, here's a new mixtape in honor of the brand new year and all that it may bring... so far mine has started off beautifully.

Click on the link below to download.

Cheers to 2012...

Summer's Almost Gone: Can I Borrow Your Mixtape? #7

Photo by Sebastian Spader. Los Angeles, August 2011.

Once again, Los Angeles has surprised me, mischievous & lovable drag queen that she is. I'm going to miss the city I always thought I'd never miss. Here's to an incredible end of summer/beginning of fall... and to the next chapter, wherever it may lead... here's some of what I'll be listening to on my plane ride back to New York:

Stay tuned for my photos & article/interview with Active Child on Pas Un Autre!

Bon Voyage: Can I Borrow Your Mixtape? #6

In honor of sun, travels, new acquaintances and whatever else this summer will be bringing our way... a new (rather eclectic) mixtape! I will be leaving for Europe in 2 days so will probably be a bit neglectful of the blog for the next few weeks... but will hopefully return with lots to blog about... !

So enjoy, mes petites crevettes! And happy summer to you all...

May Day: Can I Borrow Your Mixtape? #5

ANIMALS

Have you forgotten what we were like then

when we were still first rate
and the day came fat with an apple in its mouth

it's no use worrying about Time
but we did have a few tricks up our sleeves
and turned some sharp corners

the whole pasture looked like our meal
we didn't need speedometers
we could manage cocktails out of ice and water

i wouldn't want to be faster
or greener than now if you were with me O you
were the best of all my days

April Fool's: Can I Borrow Your Mixtape? #4

Reasons to celebrate:

1) It is finally April... which means sunshine (or rain, if you're on the east coast), Easter, blooming flowers, picnics in the park and lots of music festivals!

2) I have finally learned how to make zip files... which means no more inane clicking!!!

But this mix really sucks, so you shouldn't download it.... APRIL FOOL'S! (I know I'm a day late, oops). It really doesn't suck. In fact, it's great. Find out for yourself:

Enjoy!

Can I Borrow Your Mixtape? #3

Spring is just around the corner (in fact, according to the so-called Groundhog, it already is spring... but I've never believed him), and for those of us in school, so are midterms. What better way to procrastinate from beginning that daunting 8-page Lacan paper than a new playlist? None that I can think of. Except for attempt to untangle your jewelry (see above), or maybe what I did last night, which was see
Des Hommes et Des Dieux (English title: Of Gods and Men), Xavier Beauvois' startlingly gorgeous (and horrifically depressing) film about French missionaries holding their ground against brutal Islamic extremists in Algeria during the mid-90's. Yes, it's sad, slow-moving and long, but I highly recommend it-- the stunning visuals alone are worth the time you may not have spent studying for that Physics test (ha, Physics... who am I kidding?). Oh, and it includes the most adorable little old man I've ever seen in my life, Jacques Herlin (pictured below), who plays Frère Amédée. Anyway, here it is, kids:

Can I Borrow Your Mixtape? #2

Monument Odessa, 1991

"We are all so complicated, and then we die. We are a subject one day, with our vanities, our loves, our worries, and then one day, abruptly, we become nothing but an object, an absolutely disgusting pile of shit. We pass very quickly from one stage to the next. It's very bizarre. It will happen to all of us, and fairly soon too. We become an object you can handle like a stone, but a stone that was someone."
-Christian Boltanski

New year, new mixtape-- plus one of French contemporary artist Christian Boltanski's haunting "missing children" photography installations. I was lucky enough to see Boltanski's installation pieces in the basement galleries of the Musée d'Art Moderne-- which included one room completely lined in slightly-blurred newspaper-quality photographs of anonymous missing children, one room nearly filled with stacked articles of clothing, and one filled with weathered phone books and Yellow Pages from each and every nation--during my stay in Paris. Boltanski handles the concepts of loss, death, memory and nostalgia with a eerily delicate transcendence. His work is definitely worth looking into-- as well as that of his partner, Annette Messager (more on her to come)!

Some of what I've been listening to lately:

Can I Borrow Your Mixtape? #1

Voici, a playlist for that long (or not) plane ride home for the holidays. Just some stuff I've been listening to for the past couple weeks. Let's call it Paris Blizzard in light of the
tempête de neige that has enveloped my current home city for the past two days. Elle est belle alors!

Along with this lovely William Eggleston photo that epitomizes traveling in style.

Longer entries to come soon... having no internet makes blogging difficult. Cheers.
